About the Play
Mel is happily engaged. She’s also an active Marine Corp translator. While deployed on her second mission, Mel’s father, who has been degenerating due to Alzheimer’s, passes away. Though she has the opportunity, she remains in Afghanistan, leaving her mother and her sister to pick up the pieces. Shortly thereafter, Mel loses a friend to the war as well.
When she returns home, she is confused and haunted by nightmares. She is terrified, not only by what she has seen and lost, but by the prospect of going back to her family. Her mother, Wendy, does her best to hold it together, but has not dealt with her father’s death. Her sister, Harmony, has been the rock and refuses to be cracked by anyone or anything. To Mel’s dismay, Harmony has decided that she will take on wedding planning duties and her first task is finding Mel’s wedding gown.
Splitting time between the present wedding planning between Mel and her family, and Mel’s time in Afghanistan, The Veils explores the experiences of a soldier coming to terms with being a part of two very different worlds and a woman who isn’t sure who she is or what she wants anymore.
