If I Hold My Tongue is a 2-act play by Patricia Henley, set in Fells Point, Baltimore, exploring the lives of four prostituted women living in a halfway house. An empathetic portrait of their struggles to leave street life, If I Hold My Tongue is a realistic look at emotionally and physically scarred women who wish to return to a normal life, a job, a family, and safety.

Patricia Henley (Playwright)
Patricia Henley is the author of three novels, four short story collections, two chapbooks of poetry, a stage play, and numerous essays. Her first novel, Hummingbird House (MacMurray & Beck, 1999), was a finalist for the National Book Award and The New Yorker Fiction Prize. Pantheon published her second novel, In the River Sweet, and it was widely praised in newspapers and magazines. In the River Sweet was a Border’s Original Voices. Her first book of stories, Friday Night at Silver Star (Graywolf, 1986), was the winner of the Montana First Book Award. Engine Books published her fourth collection of stories, Other Heartbreaks in 2011. She lives in Frostburg, Maryland.
Lucinda Merry-Browne (Director)
Lucinda Merry-Browne is the Founder and Artistic Director of Compass Rose Theater. Blending her experience as a theater educator and a professional actor and director, she founded Compass Rose to create a teaching theater, rooted in education, but offering outstanding quality in its productions. For Compass Rose Theater she directed Greater Tuna, Murder in the Cathedral, Cats, Another Day on Willow Street, Romeo and Juliet, The Sound of Music, The Miracle Worker and Oliver. She trained at the Pittsburgh Playhouse and is a graduate of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City. She holds a degree in English from Duke University and attended Wellesley College. She is a proud member of Actor’s Equity Association.
